ATL Spurs and Atlanta Habitat

ATL Spurs and Homeowners

This past Saturday, ATL Spurs spent a day with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity on one of their builds for the third year running. We were joined by volunteers from the CDC and house sponsor Huber.

We started the chilly morning meeting Craig and Janelle, the future homeowners. They told us about their adult son, who has special needs, and about how excited they all were to be moving into a permanent place to call home. Janelle, who walks with a cane, spend the day manning the hospitality table – making sure everyone was well hydrated and brightening break time with her warm smile and sincere gratitude. Craig hopped right up on a ladder, hanging HardiPlank siding, and mentoring a young volunteer. You could feel the love he put into every hammer stroke. Neither Craig nor Janelle ever missed an opportunity to speak to and thank a volunteer.

With projects including interior framing, roof prepping, siding, and front porch stair building, there were plenty of tasks to go around. What started out as a chilly day in the 30s, saw the volunteers shedding layers as the day warmed and everyone worked up a sweat. I think we were all exhausted by the end of the day, but we were a happy bunch too. The sound of hammers may have been dominant, but it was accompanied with just as much laughter.

Thanks to Atlanta Habitat, their own hard work, and the work of community volunteers, Craig, Janelle, and their son will move into their very own home next year. As for your fellow ATL Spurs, we walked away at the end of the day with full hearts. Our few hours of hard work will pay big toward Craig and Janelle’s house. They’ll pay a 30-year, zero-interest mortgage as an Atlanta Habitat homeowner, and our work helps to reduce the cost of building their house. That makes their mortgage affordable and all of us proud! In fact, it was such a wonderful experience, that ATL Spurs will definitely be doing it again.  I hope more of you can join us next time, because we truly got more than we gave out of this service project. COYS!!
